This week we have a sister blog post to last week’s! I’m going to give you a couple ideas for where to start when looking to spruce up the interior of your home before you begin showing it to buyers. We’re going to be focusing on minor details around the home that you can improve yourself at a low cost.
A common first step to DIY interior improvement is to fill cracks or holes and repaint the walls. Whether you stage your house or not, cracks and holes in the walls, ceilings, and door or window frames will be noticeable. Make sure to do a walkthrough of your house so that you can find and address any imperfections that need to be filled and painted over. If you have any brightly coloured walls, real estate experts suggest that you repaint in a more neutral colour. Neutral colours can make small or dark rooms seem larger and brighter. This is because the neutrality doesn’t draw your eyes to the walls, but allows you to focus on the open space.
Recaulking your bathroom and kitchen is a super easy way to bump up the clean and sharp look of your home. Although you may not notice because it happens over time, after years of contact, crisp white caulking becomes dirty and discoloured, as well as torn up. All you need is a putty knife, caulk remover, and a damp cloth to remove the old caulking.
Finally, make sure to conceal scratches and divots in your hardwood, and consider polishing your floors. Hardwood floors are very appealing to potential buyers, however, hardwood that is scratched, worn out, and dull has the opposite effect. Dull, scratched floors will dull the look of the whole room the hardwood is in, polishing the floors will increase the saturation of the floors and make the house feel highly maintained. Hardwood scratches can be easily repaired with specifically designed crayons that can be found at most home improvement stores.
